Sunkoshi-Marin Diversion Project (SMDP) is located in Sindhuli District. The diverted water is projected to irrigate agricultural lands in Bara, Rautahat, Sarlahi, Mahottari, and Dhanusha District. The SMDP headwork is accessible from the BP Highway, which is 102 km from Kathmandu. The powerhouse area is accessible from Sindhuli Bazar, which is located in Kundule. An 8 km gravel road connects Kundule to the Sindhuli market.
Low water flows in the Bagmati River have caused severe difficulties for farmers in Rautahat and Sarlahi districts to irrigate their fields. In the dry season, irrigation facilities are not available. Agriculture, the major contributor to Nepal’s economy, is mainly rain-fed. Heavy reliance on rain water and limited irrigation facilities have led to lowered outputs that adversely affect the country’s economy. The project, once completed, will provide round-the-year irrigation facility to five drought-prone districts—Rautahat, Dhanusha, Mahottari, Sarlahi and Bara. Insufficient rainfalls have become a recurrent problem in these Terai districts for a long time.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
1. To analyze pre-defined physico-chemical parameters of the water sample using accepted tools and techniques.
2. To monitor pre-defined air quality parameters using accepted tools and techniques.
